PCC Portrait Painters

PCC Rock Creek at Beaverton Lodge

August 13th - September 9th, 2006

PCC portrait painters“To paint someone’s portrait is an act of acknowledgement, inquiry, scrutiny and empathy. This mysterious process has not greatly changed since the dawn of art. The act of silently looking at another person and trying to make an image of them is a strange PCC portrait paintersritual of intersection — often between complete strangers who exchange only a few words and who may never meet again. This ritual has no corollary in any other discipline. It is hard work for both artist and for the model. Often the results are difficult for both artist and model to fathom. Yet the act itself, despite the results, is significant; it speaks of the deep and mysterious need to truly see another person.” Mark Andre

PCC portrait paintersThis exhibition is the result of a fruitful collaboration between painting students at Portland Community College’s Rock Creek Campus and the residents of Beaverton Lodge. PCC portrait paintersSince March of this year, approximately once a month, a handful of Andres’ current and former students have gathered at the Lodge to paint portraits for two- hour sessions: Mark Andres, Min-Han Kim, Hyun-Jo Kim, Abbey Marble, Debbie Marble, Diane Palomba, F.X. Rosica, Grace Sanchez, Bob Schlegel, Karen Strand, Sue Svoboda, June Weisman.

The concentration and stamina involved in being an art model at any age are often underestimated. These models have been excellent portrait subjects: Dorothy Bean-Smith, Jane Biethan, Jacqueline Brockway, Mary Coleman, Adell Johnson, Frances Jorgensen, Charles Jorgensen, Esther “Lyra” Knierem, Casey Lohrie, Bill Lohrie, Marguerite Nicholson and Roger Paquette.
