"Following My Bliss "
March 12th – April 22, 2006
“I was born in Boston, Mass. in 1927. My first brush with art was as a high school student trying to draw fighters and bombers because World War II was in full swing and my heroes were marines, rangers and fighter pilots.
I joined the faculty of the School of Medicine, OHSU, after completing my medicine residency. I was a Dean and a Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry. My art interest began to rejuvenate in 1975 with the encouragement of my mother, who loved to paint. I spent each vacation painting, and on Saturday mornings, took lessons at the Oregon Society of Artists. I was able to combine my art and medical interest by creating a manual for medical student on how to cope with stress. I drew 50 cartoons to illustrate the manual because I knew the medical students had enough to read with their other courses. Also I was convinced that a picture was worth a thousand words.
When I retired in 1993, I was able to work full-time as an artist. I attend Portland Community College where I have taken a variety of art courses. I have many mentors on the PCC faculty. I am particularly grateful to Ree Barron for teaching me drawing at the Oregon Society of Artists. Doing art keeps me sane. As Joseph Campbell would say, I am following my bliss.”
